De Zelfmaker supports people who use the hardware that Bas Wijnen designs and builds. This page contains a selection of those products. Please contact us in case you have any questions.
The CNC robot that is mostly used as a 3-D printer is the best known hardware of De Zelfmaker. It's based on Athena, which was designed by Bas and his friends, with whom he founded Phidias LLC in the United States. Both with Athena and Minerva, Bas has given workshops for educators and others.
Minerva uses a delta geometry. That makes it ideal for applications that need a light head that can move quickly. But it is also capable of using a heavy head with a light base plate, for example to support milling or PCBs. In that case the head is mounted on a stationary beam and the base is moving underneath it.
More information about Minerva can be found on its own page.
Bas designed this device as part of his PhD research. The original design was connected to a Raspberry Pi. We now recommend connecting it to a system that runs Franklin.
The device has a simple design, with a motor that is used to control a syringe. This way, liquids can be used in a 3-D printer, for example. Medical applications are also obvious, however those are usually not allowed due to lack of certification.

This is another device that Bas designed during his PhD. It is based on a colorimeter, which measure the absorption of light of a certain wavelength. The colorimeter can be used to measure the concentration of dissolved substances. This nephalometer does that too, and in addition it measures diffuse light. This can be used to determine the amount of material that isn't dissolved, so it is in suspension or emulsion. The combination of those two measurements can be used as to determine water quality. Of course there are also other applications for it.
